[Alarums. Enter MACBETH]

MACBETH

They have tied me to a stake; I cannot fly,

Like bearbaiting, I’m on a stake, and trapped,

But, bear-like, I must fight the course. What's he

But, like the bear, I have to fight. Where’s he

That was not born of woman? Such a one

Not born by woman? He’s the only one

Am I to fear, or none.

I have to fear, or no one.

[Enter YOUNG SIWARD]

YOUNG SIWARD

What is thy name?

What’s your name?

MACBETH

Thou'lt be afraid to hear it.

You’ll be afraid on hearing it.

YOUNG SIWARD

No; though thou call'st thyself a hotter name

No; even if it’s worse than any devil

Than any is in hell.

That might reside in hell.

MACBETH

My name's Macbeth.

My name’s Macbeth.

YOUNG SIWARD

The devil himself could not pronounce a title

The devil himself could not speak out a name

More hateful to mine ear.

I hate more than I’ve heard.

MACBETH

No, nor more fearful.

No, nor more scary.

YOUNG SIWARD

Thou liest, abhorred tyrant; with my sword

You lie, you wretched tyrant. With my sword,

I'll prove the lie thou speak'st.

I’ll prove the lies you tell.

[They fight and YOUNG SIWARD is slain]

MACBETH

Thou wast born of woman

A woman bore you,

But swords I smile at, weapons laugh to scorn,

So I laugh at your sword, like every weapon

Brandished by man that's of a woman born.

That’s brandished by a man a woman bore.

[Exit]

[Alarums. Enter MACDUFF]

MACDUFF

That way the noise is. Tyrant, show thy face!

The noise was over there. Come forward, tyrant!

If thou be'st slain and with no stroke of mine,

If you are killed and it’s not me who kills you,

My wife and children's ghosts will haunt me still.

My wife and children’s ghosts will always haunt me.

I cannot strike at wretched kerns, whose arms

I can’t strike at pathetic soldiers, who have

Are hired to bear their staves: either thou, Macbeth,

Been paid to lift their swords. Either you, Macbeth,

Or else my sword with an unbattered edge

Or else I will return this unmarked sword

I sheathe again undeeded. There thou shouldst be;

Into its sheath, unused. You must be there;

By this great clatter, one of greatest note

For, by that clatter, someone most important

Seems bruited. Let me find him, fortune!

Is being announced. Good fortune, help me find him!

And more I beg not.

I ask for nothing more.

[Exit. Alarums]

[Enter MALCOLM and SIWARD]

SIWARD

This way, my lord; the castle's gently rendered:

This way; the castle has surrendered meekly;

The tyrant's people on both sides do fight;

The soldiers of Macbeth fight on both sides;

The noble thanes do bravely in the war;

Our noblemen have bravely fought the battle,

The day almost itself professes yours,

And time of victory almost is upon us,

And little is to do.

With little left to do.

MALCOLM

We have met with foes

We’ve faced an enemy

That strike beside us.

That doesn’t want to fight.

SIWARD

Enter, sir, the castle.

Enter the castle, sir.

[Exeunt. Alarums]
