The Tempest Act 5, Scene 1: Retold in Modern English Verse
"Mine would, sir, were I human"
Ariel says that if it were human its affections would become tender, and Prospero chooses forgiveness over revenge. He renounces his magic, promising to break his staff and drown his book, releases the charmed court, forgives Alonso and Antonio, and reclaims Milan. He then reveals Ferdinand and Miranda playing chess; Miranda marvels at the brave new world, and her father says it is new to her. The ship is found whole, Caliban and the drunkards are pardoned, and Prospero sets Ariel free.
Characters appearing: Prospero | Ariel | Alonso | Sebastian | Antonio | Gonzalo | Adrian | Francisco | Miranda | Ferdinand | Master | Boatswain | Caliban | Stephano | Trinculo

BEFORE PROSPERO'S CELL.
[ENTER PROSPERO IN HIS MAGIC ROBES, AND ARIEL]
PROSPERO
Now does my project gather to a head:
So now my plans are reaching their fruition:
My charms crack not; my spirits obey; and time
My spells are holding; spirits still obey; and
Goes upright with his carriage. How's the day?
It’s all going to plan. What is the time?
ARIEL
On the sixth hour; at which time, my lord,
It’s six o’clock, the time at which, my lord,
You said our work should cease.
You said our work would finish.
PROSPERO
I did say so,
I did say that,
When first I raised the tempest. Say, my spirit,
When I first made the tempest. Tell me, spirit,
How fares the king and's followers?
How is the king and all his men?
ARIEL
Confined together
They’re tied up
In the same fashion as you gave in charge,
Together in the way that you instructed,
Just as you left them; all prisoners, sir,
Just as you left them; they’re all prisoners, sir,
In the line-grove which weather-fends your cell;
In the lime-grove that keeps rain out of your cave;
They cannot budge till your release. The king,
They can’t move till you free them. Now, the king,
His brother and yours, abide all three distracted
His brother and your brother suffer, worried,
And the remainder mourning over them,
And all the other people mourn for them
Brimful of sorrow and dismay; but chiefly
With sorrow and dismay, but it is mainly
Him that you termed, sir, 'The good old lord Gonzalo;'
The man they call, ‘The good old lord Gonzalo;’
His tears run down his beard, like winter's drops
His tears run down his beard, like melting snow
From eaves of reeds. Your charm so strongly works 'em
From thatched roofs. All your spells are so effective,
That if you now beheld them, your affections
That if you saw them, all your feelings would
Would become tender.
Become considerate.
PROSPERO
Dost thou think so, spirit?
You really think so?
ARIEL
Mine would, sir, were I human.
Mine would, if I were human.
PROSPERO
And mine shall.
Then mine will.
Hast thou, which art but air, a touch, a feeling
If you – a spirit made of air – have feelings
Of their afflictions, and shall not myself,
For how they’re suffering, then shouldn’t I,
One of their kind, that relish all as sharply,
A human like them, one who feels the same pain
Passion as they, be kindlier moved than thou art?
And passion like them, hence be kinder than you?
Though with their high wrongs I am struck to the quick,
Although their evil actions wound me up,
Yet with my nobler reason 'gainst my fury
But, with my better judgement, not through anger,
Do I take part: the rarer action is
I will engage: it is rarer behaviour
In virtue than in vengeance: they being penitent,
To act with kindness than revenge. They’re sorry,
The sole drift of my purpose doth extend
And hence the only thing I need to do
Not a frown further. Go release them, Ariel:
Is not be angry. Free them all now, Ariel:
My charms I'll break, their senses I'll restore,
I’ll break my spells, return their faculties,
And they shall be themselves.
And they will be themselves again.
ARIEL
I'll fetch them, sir.
I’ll fetch them.
[EXIT]
PROSPERO
Ye elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes and groves,
You elves within the hills, streams, lakes and groves,
And ye that on the sands with printless foot
And you that leave no footprint in the sand
Do chase the ebbing Neptune and do fly him
When chasing out the tide and running from it
When he comes back; you demi-puppets that
When it returns; you little puppet creatures
By moonshine do the green sour ringlets make,
That make rings in the green grass overnight,
Whereof the ewe not bites, and you whose pastime
Which all the sheep won’t eat; and you whose job
Is to make midnight mushrooms, that rejoice
Is making mushrooms through the night, who cheer
To hear the solemn curfew; by whose aid,
When dusk arrives; and all of you who’ve helped,
Weak masters though ye be, I have bedimmed
Although you are not powerful, I’ve darkened
The noontide sun, called forth the mutinous winds,
The midday sun, called up the stormy winds,
And 'twixt the green sea and the azured vault
And made the line between the sea and sky
Set roaring war: to the dread rattling thunder
Fight in a fierce battle. To the thunder,
Have I given fire and rifted Jove's stout oak
I’ve given lightning, splitting Jove’s thick tree
With his own bolt; the strong-based promontory
With his own lightning bolt. The rocky headland
Have I made shake and by the spurs plucked up
I’ve made to shake and by the roots I’ve plucked
The pine and cedar: graves at my command
The pine and cedar trees. I’ve ordered graves
Have waked their sleepers, oped, and let 'em forth
To wake their sleeping dead, open and free them
By my so potent art. But this rough magic
With my effective spells. But all this magic
I here abjure, and, when I have required
I now reject, and when I get to hear
Some heavenly music, which even now I do,
Some heavenly music, like I’m starting to now,
To work mine end upon their senses that
To work my plan upon the senses of those
This airy charm is for, I'll break my staff,
For whom my magic is, I’ll break my wand,
Bury it certain fathoms in the earth,
And bury it deep down within the earth,
And deeper than did ever plummet sound
And deeper than an anchor ever dropped to,
I'll drown my book.
I’ll throw my book of spells.
[SOLEMN MUSIC]
[RE-ENTER ARIEL BEFORE: THEN ALONSO, WITH A FRANTIC GESTURE, ATTENDED BY GONZALO; SEBASTIAN AND ANTONIO IN LIKE MANNER, ATTENDED BY ADRIAN AND FRANCISCO; THEY ALL ENTER THE CIRCLE WHICH PROSPERO HAD MADE, AND THERE STAND CHARMED; WHICH PROSPERO OBSERVING, SPEAKS:]
A solemn air and the best comforter
A solemn tune’s the best way to bring comfort
To an unsettled fancy cure thy brains,
To troubled minds desiring to be cured,
Now useless, boiled within thy skull! There stand,
That now are useless in their rage! Stand there,
For you are spell-stopped.
For you are spell-bound.
Holy Gonzalo, honourable man,
Decent Gonzalo, honourable man,
Mine eyes, even sociable to the show of thine,
My eyes, in sympathy with how your eyes are,
Fall fellowly drops. The charm dissolves apace,
Are crying too. The spell is wearing off,
And as the morning steals upon the night,
And as the light of morning ends the night,
Melting the darkness, so their rising senses
Removing darkness, they’ll come to their senses
Begin to chase the ignorant fumes that mantle
And start to lose their puzzling haziness
Their clearer reason. O good Gonzalo,
To clear their judgement. Oh, good Gonzalo,
My true preserver, and a loyal sir
My real saviour, and a loyal servant
To him you follow'st! I will pay thy graces
Unto the king you follow! I’ll reward you
Home both in word and deed. Most cruelly
With both my words and actions. Very cruelly
Didst thou, Alonso, use me and my daughter:
Did you, Alonso, use me and my daughter:
Thy brother was a furtherer in the act.
Your brother also helped you in the act.
Thou art pinched for’t now, Sebastian. Flesh and blood,
You’re highly bruised, Sebastian. My kinsman,
You, brother mine, that entertained ambition,
My brother, driven by your wild ambition,
Expelled remorse and nature; who, with Sebastian,
You spurned remorse and kinship; with Sebastian –
Whose inward pinches therefore are most strong,
Whose bruises are the worst because of this –
Would here have killed your king; I do forgive thee,
You would have killed your king; I do forgive you,
Unnatural though thou art. Their understanding
Despite your evilness. Their clarity
Begins to swell, and the approaching tide
Of thought is coming back, like rising tide
Will shortly fill the reasonable shore
That soon will fill their empty shore of reason
That now lies foul and muddy. Not one of them
That currently is muddied. None of them
That yet looks on me, or would know me. Ariel,
That sees me now will know me. Ariel,
Fetch me the hat and rapier in my cell:
Fetch me the hat and sword from in my cave:
I will discase me, and myself present
I will remove this robe, and show myself
As I was sometime Milan: quickly, spirit;
The way I was back in Milan: go, quickly;
Thou shalt ere long be free.
You will be free before too long.
ARIEL
[ARIEL sings and helps to attire PROSPERO]
Where the bee sucks, there suck I:
Where the bee sucks nectar, so do I:
In a cowslip's bell I lie;
In a cowslip flower is where I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
I lie there when the owls cry.
On the bat's back I do fly
On a bat’s back I do fly
After summer merrily.
After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.
PROSPERO
Why, that's my dainty Ariel! I shall miss thee:
Well, that’s my lovely Ariel! I shall miss you:
But yet thou shalt have freedom: so, so, so.
But you will have your freedom: so that’s better.
To the king's ship, invisible as thou art:
Go to the king’s ship; stay invisible:
There shalt thou find the mariners asleep
There you will find the sailors all asleep
Under the hatches; the master and the boatswain
Below deck; find the captain and the bosun
Being awake, enforce them to this place,
And wake them up and bring them back to here,
And presently, I prithee.
And do it quickly, please.
ARIEL
I drink the air before me, and return
I’ll hurry through the air, and will return
Or ere your pulse twice beat.
Before your heart has beaten twice.
[EXIT]
GONZALO
All torment, trouble, wonder and amazement
This place is full of torment, pain, amazement
Inhabits here: some heavenly power guide us
And wonder: may some god guide us to get
Out of this fearful country!
Out of this terrifying land!
PROSPERO
Behold, sir king,
Look here, king,
The wronged Duke of Milan, Prospero:
I’m Prospero, the wronged Duke of Milan:
For more assurance that a living prince
For further proof that I’m a living prince
Does now speak to thee, I embrace thy body;
That’s speaking to you now, I will embrace you;
And to thee and thy company I bid
And I will offer you and your companions
A hearty welcome.
My warmest welcome.
ALONSO
Whether thou best he or no,
If you’re him or not,
Or some enchanted trifle to abuse me,
Or just another magic spell to trick me,
As late I have been, I not know: thy pulse
Which happened recently, I don’t know. Your pulse
Beats as of flesh and blood; and, since I saw thee,
Beats as a human heart; and since I’ve seen you,
The affliction of my mind amends, with which,
My woolly-mindedness has healed, which was,
I fear, a madness held me: this must crave,
I think, caused by insanity, suggesting
An if this be at all, a most strange story.
That something very strange is going on.
Thy dukedom I resign and do entreat
I do resign my dukedom and I ask
Thou pardon me my wrongs. But how should Prospero
That you forgive me for my wrongs. But how come
Be living and be here?
You’re living and you’re here?
PROSPERO
First, noble friend,
First, noble friend,
Let me embrace thine age, whose honour cannot
Let me embrace you, for your honour is
Be measured or confined.
So great it cannot be defined.
GONZALO
Whether this be
If that’s true
Or be not, I'll not swear.
Or not, I do not know.
PROSPERO
You do yet taste
But you have sampled
Some subtilties o' the isle, that will not let you
Anomalies upon this isle that make you
Believe things certain. Welcome, my friends all!
Believe some things aren’t true. Welcome, my friends!
[Aside to SEBASTIAN and ANTONIO]
But you, my brace of lords, were I so minded,
But you two lords, if I were so inclined,
I here could pluck his highness' frown upon you
I now could make the king be angry with you
And justify you traitors: at this time
And prove to him you’re traitors: but for now
I will tell no tales.
I’ll keep it to myself.
SEBASTIAN
[Aside]
The devil speaks in him.
The devil speaks.
PROSPERO
No.
No.
For you, most wicked sir, whom to call brother
And you, most wicked man, whom calling brother
Would even infect my mouth, I do forgive
Would make me sick, I do forgive all of
Thy rankest fault; all of them; and require
The awful things you’ve done; but now I need
My dukedom of thee, which perforce, I know,
My dukedom back from you, which you’re compelled
Thou must restore.
To give to me.
ALONSO
If thou be'st Prospero,
If you are Prospero,
Give us particulars of thy preservation;
Explain to us how you survived, in detail;
How thou hast met us here, who three hours since
How you’ve met us here, who, three hours ago,
Were wrecked upon this shore; where I have lost –
Were shipwrecked on this shore; in which I lost –
How sharp the point of this remembrance is! –
It pains me to remember what has happened! –
My dear son Ferdinand.
My dear son Ferdinand.
PROSPERO
I am woe for't, sir.
I’m sorry for that.
ALONSO
Irreparable is the loss, and patience
I’ll never overcome the loss, and time
Says it is past her cure.
Will never cure the pain.
PROSPERO
I rather think
I rather think
You have not sought her help, of whose soft grace
You ought to seek the help from time, whose kindness
For the like loss I have her sovereign aid
Has helped me with a similar loss I’ve had
And rest myself content.
And left me feeling happy.
ALONSO
You the like loss!
Similar loss!
PROSPERO
As great to me as late; and, supportable
As great, also as recent, to me; and
To make the dear loss, have I means much weaker
To make my loss more painful, I have fewer
Than you may call to comfort you, for I
Sources of help to comfort me, for I
Have lost my daughter.
Have lost my daughter.
ALONSO
A daughter?
A daughter?
O heavens, that they were living both in Naples,
Oh God, I wish that they were both in Naples,
The king and queen there! That they were, I wish
Ruling as king and queen! To do that, I wish
Myself were mudded in that oozy bed
That I had drowned and lay within the seabed
Where my son lies. When did you lose your daughter?
Beside my son. When did you lose your daughter?
PROSPERO
In this last tempest. I perceive these lords
In the last tempest. It seems that these lords
At this encounter do so much admire
Are so amazed at meeting with me here,
That they devour their reason and scarce think
They’ve lost their sense of reason, not believing
Their eyes do offices of truth, their words
What they are seeing with their eyes, their mouths
Are natural breath: but, howsoe'er you have
Aghast. Although whatever is the cause
Been justled from your senses, know for certain
For losing all your senses, you must know
That I am Prospero and that very duke
That I am Prospero, that self-same duke
Which was thrust forth of Milan, who most strangely
Who was expelled from Milan, and who strangely
Upon this shore, where you were wrecked, was landed,
Arrived upon this shore, where you were shipwrecked,
To be the lord on't. No more yet of this;
To be the lord of it. Enough of that, though,
For 'tis a chronicle of day by day,
For it’s a tale that would take days to tell,
Not a relation for a breakfast nor
It’s not a subject for a breakfast, nor
Befitting this first meeting. Welcome, sir;
Appropriate for our first meeting. Welcome;
This cell's my court: here have I few attendants
This cave’s my court. I have some servants here,
And subjects none abroad: pray you, look in.
But none around the island: look inside, please.
My dukedom since you have given me again,
Since you have given me my dukedom back,
I will requite you with as good a thing;
I’ll give you something equally as good;
At least bring forth a wonder, to content ye
For it’s a thing as wondrous for you
As much as me my dukedom.
As getting back my dukedom is to me.
[HERE PROSPERO DISCOVERS FERDINAND AND MIRANDA PLAYING AT CHESS]
MIRANDA
Sweet lord, you play me false.
Dear lord, you’re cheating me.
FERDINAND
No, my dear'st love,
I’m not, my love,
I would not for the world.
I would not for the world.
MIRANDA
Yes, for a score of kingdoms you should wrangle,
You’d cheat to win the rule of twenty kingdoms
And I would call it, fair play.
And I would say that’s fair.
ALONSO
If this prove
If this is only
A vision of the Island, one dear son
A spell cast on this island, then my dear son
Shall I twice lose.
I will have lost twice.
SEBASTIAN
A most high miracle!
It’s a miracle!
FERDINAND
Though the seas threaten, they are merciful;
Though seas are dangerous, they’re merciful;
I have cursed them without cause.
I’ve sworn at them without a reason.
[Kneels]
ALONSO
Now all the blessings
Blessings
Of a glad father compass thee about!
From your delighted father must surround you!
Arise, and say how thou camest here.
Stand up and tell me how you came here.
MIRANDA
O, wonder!
Oh, wow!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How many gorgeous men are standing here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
How beautiful mankind is! Luscious world,
That has such people in't!
That has such men in it!
PROSPERO
'Tis new to thee.
It’s new to you.
ALONSO
What is this maid with whom thou wast at play?
Who is this lady you were playing chess with?
Your eld'st acquaintance cannot be three hours:
The longest you could know her for is three hours:
Is she the goddess that hath severed us,
Is she the goddess that has split us up, and
And brought us thus together?
Then brought us back together?
FERDINAND
Sir, she is mortal;
She is human;
But by immortal Providence she's mine:
But by the grace of God, she is my wife:
I chose her when I could not ask my father
I chose her when I could not ask my father
For his advice, nor thought I had one. She
For his advice, and didn’t think I had one.
Is daughter to this famous Duke of Milan,
She’s daughter to this grand Duke of Milan,
Of whom so often I have heard renown,
Whom I have often heard great things about,
But never saw before; of whom I have
But hadn’t seen before; from him I have been
Received a second life; and second father
Granted a second life; and second father
This lady makes him to me.
This lady makes him.
ALONSO
I am hers:
I’m her father too, then.
But, O, how oddly will it sound that I
But, oh, how strange it’s going to sound when I
Must ask my child forgiveness!
Must ask my child forgiveness!
PROSPERO
There, sir, stop:
Stop there, sir:
Let us not burthen our remembrance with
We must not burden all our memories with
A heaviness that's gone.
The sadness of the past.
GONZALO
I have inly wept,
I’ve cried inside,
Or should have spoke ere this. Look down, you god,
Or should have spoken up before now. Look, god,
And on this couple drop a blessed crown!
Down on this couple, and give them your blessing!
For it is you that have chalked forth the way
For you’re the one who’s marked the path for us
Which brought us hither.
Which brought us all here.
ALONSO
I say, Amen, Gonzalo!
Yes, Amen, Gonzalo!
GONZALO
Was Milan thrust from Milan, that his issue
Now was the Duke of Milan thrust from Milan
Should become kings of Naples? O, rejoice
So that his heirs be kings of Naples? Oh, joy,
Beyond a common joy, and set it down
Let’s celebrate this happy time and write it
With gold on lasting pillars: In one voyage
In gold on marble pillars. In this journey,
Did Claribel her husband find at Tunis,
In Tunis, Claribel courted a husband;
And Ferdinand, her brother, found a wife
And Ferdinand, her brother, found a wife
Where he himself was lost, Prospero his dukedom
Where he was shipwrecked; Prospero got his dukedom
In a poor isle and all of us ourselves
Upon a desert isle, and all of us found
When no man was his own.
Ourselves when we were mesmerised.
ALONSO
[To FERDINAND and MIRANDA]
Give me your hands:
Hold my hand:
Let grief and sorrow still embrace his heart
Let sadness and unhappiness fall on him
That doth not wish you joy!
That does not wish you joy!
GONZALO
Be it so! Amen!
Amen to that!
[RE-ENTER ARIEL, WITH THE MASTER AND BOATSWAIN AMAZEDLY FOLLOWING]
O, look, sir, look, sir! Here is more of us:
Oh, look, sir, look, sir! Here come more of us:
I prophesied, if a gallows were on land,
I said if there were gallows fit for hanging,
This fellow could not drown. Now, blasphemy,
This fellow couldn’t drown. Blasphemous man,
That swear'st grace o'erboard, not an oath on shore?
That swore like he threw God to sea, you swear now?
Hast thou no mouth by land? What is the news?
Can you not speak on land? What is the news?
BOATSWAIN
The best news is, that we have safely found
The best news is that we have safely found
Our king and company; the next, our ship –
Our king and all his men; and next, our ship –
Which, but three glasses since, we gave out split –
Which, till three hours ago, we thought had split up –
Is tight and yare and bravely rigged as when
Is shipshape and its sails are rigged as when
We first put out to sea.
We first set off.
ARIEL
[Aside to PROSPERO]
Sir, all this service
Sir, I have done all this
Have I done since I went.
Since I left here.
PROSPERO
[Aside to ARIEL]
My tricksy spirit!
Well done, my magic spirit!
ALONSO
These are not natural events; they strengthen
This isn’t natural; these things become
From strange to stranger. Say, how came you hither?
More strange. Tell us, how did you make it here?
BOATSWAIN
If I did think, sir, I were well awake,
If I believed that I was wide awake,
I'ld strive to tell you. We were dead of sleep,
I’d try to tell you. We were fast asleep,
And – how we know not – all clapped under hatches;
And locked below deck, though we don’t know how,
Where but even now with strange and several noises
Where even just now we all heard strange noises
Of roaring, shrieking, howling, jingling chains,
Of roaring, shrieking, howling, jingling chains,
And more diversity of sounds, all horrible,
And many other sounds, all horrible,
We were awaked; straightway, at liberty;
Which woke us up; and then we all were free;
Where we, in all her trim, freshly beheld
And we could see again, her sails all rigged,
Our royal, good and gallant ship, our master
Our wonderful and royal ship, our captain
Capering to eye her: on a trice, so please you,
Dancing when seeing her. Then in an instant,
Even in a dream, were we divided from them
As though it was a dream, we left the others
And were brought moping hither.
And we were brought here in a daze.
ARIEL
[Aside to PROSPERO]
Was't well done?
Good work, sir?
PROSPERO
[Aside to ARIEL]
Bravely, my diligence. Thou shalt be free.
Quite excellent. Now you have won your freedom.
ALONSO
This is as strange a maze as e'er men trod
This is as strange as any man’s encountered
And there is in this business more than nature
And something’s going on here that’s not normal
Was ever conduct of: some oracle
Or natural: some prophet or a priest
Must rectify our knowledge.
Must help us understand.
PROSPERO
Sir, my liege,
Well, sir, my king,
Do not infest your mind with beating on
Do not confuse your mind by worrying
The strangeness of this business; at picked leisure
About these strange occurrences; in time,
Which shall be shortly, single I'll resolve you,
Which will be soon, I will explain it to you,
Which to you shall seem probable, of every
And you will find it reasonable how all
These happened accidents; till when, be cheerful
These accidents occurred; till then, be happy
And think of each thing well.
For everything that’s happened.
[Aside to ARIEL]
Come hither, spirit:
Come here, spirit:
Set Caliban and his companions free;
Set Caliban and his companions free;
Untie the spell.
Undo the spell.
[EXIT ARIEL]
How fares my gracious sir?
How is my gracious king?
There are yet missing of your company
There still are some folk missing from your group,
Some few odd lads that you remember not.
A few odd lads that you will not remember.
[RE-ENTER ARIEL, DRIVING IN CALIBAN, STEPHANO AND TRINCULO, IN THEIR STOLEN APPAREL]
STEPHANO
Every man shift for all the rest, and
We all should help each other out, and
let no man take care for himself; for all is
leave no man to take care of himself; for everything is
but fortune. Coragio, bully-monster, coragio!
merely luck. Courage, bully-monster, courage!
TRINCULO
If these be true spies which I wear in my head,
If I can rely on these visions in my head to be real,
here's a goodly sight.
this here is a lovely sight.
CALIBAN
O Setebos, these be brave spirits indeed!
God Setebos, these are most lovely spirits!
How fine my master is! I am afraid
How smart my master looks! I am afraid
He will chastise me.
He’ll discipline me.
SEBASTIAN
Ha, ha!
Ha, ha!
What things are these, my lord Antonio?
What things are these, my lord Antonio?
Will money buy 'em?
Can I pay cash for them?
ANTONIO
Very like; one of them
Maybe; one of them
Is a plain fish, and, no doubt, marketable.
Is obviously a fish, hence can be sold.
PROSPERO
Mark but the badges of these men, my lords,
Look at the badges on these men, my lords,
Then say if they be true. This mis-shapen knave,
Then say who they belong to. This odd-shaped rogue,
His mother was a witch, and one so strong
His mother was a witch, and she was so strong
That could control the moon, make flows and ebbs,
She could control the moon and all the tides,
And deal in her command without her power.
And did all this without authority.
These three have robbed me; and this demi-devil –
These three have robbed from me; and this half-devil –
For he's a bastard one – had plotted with them
For he’s a proper bastard – plotted with them
To take my life. Two of these fellows you
To kill me. Two of these chaps you must know
Must know and own; this thing of darkness I
For they report to you; this thing of darkness,
Acknowledge mine.
I must admit is mine.
CALIBAN
I shall be pinched to death.
He’s going to kill me.
ALONSO
Is not this Stephano, my drunken butler?
Is this not Stephano, my drunken butler?
SEBASTIAN
He is drunk now: where had he wine?
He is drunk now: where did he get his wine?
ALONSO
And Trinculo is reeling ripe: where should they
And Trinculo is staggering: where could they
Find this grand liquor that hath gilded 'em?
Have found strong liquor that has got them drunk?
How camest thou in this pickle?
How did you get in such a state?
TRINCULO
I have been in such a pickle since I
I’ve been in such a state like this since I
saw you last that, I fear me, will never out of
last saw you, and I fear now that I never will be
my bones: I shall not fear fly-blowing.
sober: when dead, the flies won’t eat me.
SEBASTIAN
Why, how now, Stephano!
Well, hello there, Stephano!
STEPHANO
O, touch me not; I am not Stephano, but a cramp.
Don’t touch me; I’m not Stephano, but cramped up.
PROSPERO
You'ld be king o' the isle, sirrah?
You hoped to be the island’s king, matey?
STEPHANO
I should have been a sore one then.
I would have been a king in pain then.
ALONSO
[Pointing to CALIBAN]
This is a strange thing as e'er I looked on.
This is the strangest thing I’ve ever seen.
PROSPERO
He is as disproportioned in his manners
His manners are as rude and unappealing
As in his shape. Go, sirrah, to my cell;
As his appearance. Go, matey, to my cave;
Take with you your companions; as you look
Take all your friends with you; and as you strive
To have my pardon, trim it handsomely.
For my forgiveness, tidy up my cave well.
CALIBAN
Ay, that I will; and I'll be wise hereafter
Yes, I’ll do that; and I’ll be smart from now on
And seek for grace. What a thrice-double ass
And seek forgiveness. What a stupid ass
Was I, to take this drunkard for a god
Was I to think this drunkard was a god
And worship this dull fool!
And worship this dull fool!
PROSPERO
Go to; away!
Go on; clear off!
ALONSO
Hence, and bestow your luggage where you found it.
And then return those clothes to where you found them.
SEBASTIAN
Or stole it, rather.
Or stole them, rather.
[EXEUNT CALIBAN, STEPHANO, AND TRINCULO]
PROSPERO
Sir, I invite your highness and your train
Sir, I invite your highness and your colleagues
To my poor cell, where you shall take your rest
Into my humble cave, where you can rest
For this one night; which, part of it, I'll waste
Tonight; and I will help the hours pass
With such discourse as, I not doubt, shall make it
With conversation that I’m sure will make
Go quick away; the story of my life
The time fly; it’s the story of my life
And the particular accidents gone by
And all the strange events that have occurred
Since I came to this isle: and in the morn
Since I came to this isle. And in the morning
I'll bring you to your ship and so to Naples,
I’ll take you to your ship that’s bound for Naples,
Where I have hope to see the nuptial
Where I hope I will see the wedding party
Of these our dear-beloved solemnized;
Of these, our much-loved children, as they marry;
And thence retire me to my Milan, where
And then I will retire back to Milan, where
Every third thought shall be my grave.
I’ll contemplate my death.
ALONSO
I long
I cannot wait
To hear the story of your life, which must
To hear the story of your life, which must
Take the ear strangely.
Sound strange.
PROSPERO
I'll deliver all;
I’ll tell you everything about it;
And promise you calm seas, auspicious gales
And grant you calm seas, winds so favourable
And sail so expeditious that shall catch
You’ll sail so swiftly that you will catch up with
Your royal fleet far off.
Your royal fleet ahead of you.
[Aside to ARIEL]
My Ariel, chick,
My Ariel,
That is thy charge: then to the elements
Go make that happen, then fly on the wind
Be free, and fare thou well! Please you, draw near.
In freedom! So, farewell! Please, gather round.
[EXEUNT]
